X-Wing Tournament Tray by Systema Gaming Review

Even if you’re not a hardcore player, an X-Wing tournament tray has become quite a necessity.

I continue to marvel at the elegance and minimalism of X-Wing’s rules. I can’t quite say the same for the amount of ships, tokens and cards the game makes you lug around, though!

If you’re like me (read: cheap) you might have gotten by with a plastic IKEA container so far. Only to have ships break off their stands and tokens go missing.

If that’s you, fear not. Systema Gaming has released an X-Wing tournament tray looking to solve your pain.

Coming in at under €40, the full tray set comes with all the space you need to store ships and tokens. You can also buy individual trays, depending on your needs and budget.

Systema Gaming has also released full sets of tokens and rulers for X-Wing. We’ll take a look at those, too!

The X-Wing tournament tray

Let’s start with the awesome fact that you can get this thing with a custom engraving on the (optionable) lid.

The tray set itself is rather nifty, featuring a set of magnets (in the corners) to keep everything together.
They’re not strong enough to resist heavy and intentional shaking, but will definitely stay in place during normal handling. If you place ships in the miniatures tray, they will stay put (even at an angle).

I love how you can stack multiple trays on top of each other. It’s clear that Systema Gaming dabbles into X-Wing themselves! Removing trays from the others is a painless and easy process. That should be quite handy during gaming nights and tournaments.

My favorite part is the actual tray, designed to hold tokens and store miniatures when not in use. The cleverly designed sections allow you to customize the available space.

You’ll notice I actually put my minis in there. This is not the intended use (that’s where the miniature tray is for), but still works well for smaller ships.

Tokens and rulers

While we’re at it, let’s take a look at the rulers and tokens that we got in the box!

First, the rulers. Once again notice the engraving! I have no doubt these will stand out at the gaming club.

Also note that instead of a single range ruler, there’s actually three separate ones in there. Veteran X-Wing players know that the longer ruler can be tricky to use in crowded situations! That problem’s solved right here.

The tokens are colorful and clear. They’re easy to read, as they sport the same icons as the cardboard tokens do.

I much prefer acrylics over the standard cardboard tokens. They are much more durable and stand out better on the gaming table.

Conclusion

I know this might read like a one-sided review, but there’s a lot to like here.

The set’s design, featuring several layers and magnets, is smart. The material is sturdy. The tray itself makes the most of the space available. And of course the custom engraving is a nice touch.

The tokens and rulers are a clear step up from the cardboard tokens that come with the game. They are clear, easy to read and look the part.

I can’t wait to walk into my next X-Wing game holding all these goodies!
